Yep, hardware failure would be my thoughts too. Do you get any glitching or bright coloured lines appearing?

Sometimes overheating can cause the same problem - are your fans/airflow ports clean?

It looks like there are some unofficial x64...

It looks like there are some unofficial x64 drivers for this scanner (for Vista, but apparently work with W7).

I've not tested them and can't vouch for the download, but they may be worth a shot...
