repair install fails

Running 7 on an Asus M2N68 mb with an AMD dual core processor and NVidia Gforce 5900GT. All drivers are up to date.

Recently system restore and backup stopped working. The relevant services appear to be running, but the applet just won't run - cycles endlessly. Also Action Centre shows a backup in progress when there isn't one.

Decided to run a repair install, although scannow shows no problem. Sadly, repair install also cycles endlessly. It sticks on "collecting information".

My main hard drive is a sata - shouldn't be a problem these days, should it?

Any help appreciated...
