All the programs used are freeware.

The first thing to do is to boot into Win7 and remove Win8 from the boot
menu using EasyBCD;
http://tinyurl.com/jc6e2

Secondly, if Win8 has converted your hard drive files to Dynamic rather
than Basic format, convert them back with EasyUS Partition Manager Home
Edition;
http://www.partition-tool.com/download.htm

Thirdly remove the Win8 partition by booting with a Linux live CD, and
using "qtparted";
http://techblog.johnner.com/2005/10/...h-knoppix.html

Lastly rebuild the Windows boot system with an installation disc, Repair
function.

Reboot and let it roll.

Hi Ed,

Thanks for that recipe of information. I followed the dialogue you
generated over tha past days as to how you were able to retrieve your Win 7
installation and found it not only informative but enjoyably positive for
the way you and helpers tenaciously pursued the problem. It's really
satisfying to see yourself and folks like Paul and others working together
in a amiable way, especially within a newsgroup where the norm is very often
just the opposite. At this point I think you;ve earned the right to add
'Finder of lost partitions' after your name.

It's all part of the "Windows Preview" experience :-)

What fun would it be if it... just worked. It's gotta have a few puzzles
built in, to make it worth the download.

I do hope Microsoft improves the situation when the Win 8 OS has troubles.
When I was having trouble installing the preview in VirtualBox, many
times I got a completely black screen, with no feedback. I couldn't tell
if the OS was running, whether there was an actual BSOD, or what was going
on. I couldn't tell whether some form of keyboard input would have helped.
There was absolutely no context to go on. Now, I know they won't change that,
as it's "design intent", but it sure stinks. At least if the "kernel barfs
all over your screen", you have something to go on.

Hiya Paul.

I've found I don't need Win8 now because I've found an even better
animated Maple Leaf Rag;
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1BVHK8Yh8Bc

P.S It was a great learning curve for me. Experience like that just
fortifies the inner man

I haven't heard any Scott Joplin for a long time, so thanks! Pretty
good...

I watched the fingers (yeah, I know, it's an alien with 11 of them)
carefully, and now I can play Maple Leaf Rag myself.

But I mean on YouTube, not on the piano.

One small addendum. I found System Restore needed a bit of attention. It
had C (missing) switched on, and C switched off.
Simple action. Switch off the former and it gets dropped from the list,
then switch on the latter.

Hi ED
You can use Hiren's boot CD which is excellent for booting without any OS. B
using this you can easily delete or remove windows 08

I have copy of Hiren's boot CD. I downloaded it many months ago,
intending to look at it when I had time. But then I forgot about it.

What are its best uses?
