If it helps my Win7 has a popup from the tray LS ivon, that opens a
volume -> mixer called
Volume Mixer - Speakers (HD audio device)
with 2 sliders, one marked Device speakers, and the other
Applications each with a its own volume slider.
For either of these I can click to mute the associated channel,
so I can mute only System Sounds.
There is a similar control panel for the mixer in WinXP.
Looks as if it might be worth exploring you sound settings.

Thanks, that is good to know, thanks for pointing that out. Doesn't really
accomplish what I am trying but was worth giving it a shot. Nice to know
that is there.
