Converting them is VERY easy. You need to do a Google search on "AVI
to MPG" or "AVI to DVD". There are a ton of freeware programs out
there. There are also programs that take AVI files and make a DVD out
of them. That is probably the quickest and most simple way.

But a much, much better bet is going out and spend $30.00 to $40.00 on
a new DVD player. Most of them play AVI files now. Mine also has a USB
port and I can plug in a 500 GB HD enclosure to it and play thousands
of AVI files.

The reason I say to go this route is for a couple of reasons. Unless
you have a very fast PC, it takes hours to convert AVI or WMV files to
DVD format. The other reason is quality. You could spend hours
converting a 2 hour movie just to find out it went out of sync. It's a
pretty common occurrence with newbies converting video files.

I believe he wants to play his AVI files on his TV, not his computer.
DVD players for TV are not as versatile as computer mounted drives. I
can play almost anything on my computer, but my TV player/recorder will
only play commercial movie style (.VOB) video files.

It varies. I myself have 2 different DVD players that will play DiVX (AVI)
files. They can be on a disk in data format but both players also have USB
ports for hooking up external drives. Heck, you can get media players
without the DVD portion (just the USB ports) as cheap as $40 now so building
them into DVD players is not much effort (all the other hardware is already
there) so will probably become more prevalent over time.

I usde Avs video converter although you can hook up your cdomputer directly
to your tv and play any movies, but if your like me, I have converted many
dvd's based movies to avi based and copy to a dvd and use the inbuilt menu
and run the movies off a western digital entertainment unit. Hope this helps
