Raw network printing doesn't work correctly.

Hi all,

In a LAN we have a print server (XP). There is a printer (HP3650) attached
by USB. It is shared and all systems can print to it, no problem.
Recently we bought a laptop with Windows 7 (64b). It connects wireless to
the LAN. We can't use the printer on the laptop as there is no Windows 7
driver for the printer. So I figured out a different construction.
On the print server I installed a RAW print server which connects to the
queue of the printer. I used the Raw Print Server 1.00 which is free
available in the internet. On the laptop I created a TCP printer port and I
was able to print a test page! But here is the catch: A test print and a
print from notepad comes out correctly, whereas a print job from Word, Excel
or Autoroute or the likes not. The printer initialises but nothing comes
out. The job comes in the spooler of the print server, the printer
initialises and the job dissapears again. Then I changed the settings on the
laptop, from "printing directly to the printer" into "spooling". Traffic is
bi-directional. Now the job comes out of the printer correctly but remains
in the spooler on the laptop. I now have to stop the print spooler
temporarely and remove the spooler files. Also tried to change
"bi-directional" into "one-way printing" on the laptop, but that didn't work
out as the print jobs kept piled up in the spooler on the server.

Does anyone have an idea, apart from buying a new printer?

Thanks in advance for your help.

With best regards,
Fokke Nauta

Try installing the HP Universal print driver for Windows 7:

Hi Rob,

Thanks.
I was happy to see that such a complex matter could be volved so simple and
easy.
However ... I downloaded both Windows & 64-b drivers (PCL6 and PCL5).
Installation went smooth until I had to choose a networked printer. The
printer was found but the installer said "Contacting print server"
(translated) and came with the message Can't find driver for the HP deskjet
3600 series on the network. It let me install the driver by hand, which I
tried. It wanted to see an INF file but the correct INF files were not
there. So - insatallation aborted.
I also found that after unpacking the driver installer, a map was created
with the name xp-vista. It seemed to me that this was not a correct Windows
7 driver.

Back to square one.

Regards,
Fokke

Did you try Virtual XP Mode?
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/

I didn't try XP mode myself yet, but all my old XP printers, scanners e.t.c.
run well in my VMware XP - VM ;-)

Interesting.
On my own PC I have VMWare. I am a but reluctant to set up a VM on my
laptop, but XP mode seems interesting. I will have a try and see what it is
and how it works.
I"ll come back to you.

That's a pity, maybe your last resort is to install XP as a client in Vmware
(player will do as well) and then install your printer in the XP client.
It's a workaround but it should work seamlessly.
I have this old A3 printer that doesn't work in Vista, nor Win7.
My printjobs are done via the XP-VM.
b.t.w.
The nice part is that I assigned 1Gig RAM to the XP client.
In all the years I worked with XP, I have never seen a faster XP than this
one ;-)

I guess you're right. I then will need to uninstall all app's, set up a
large XP machine in VMWare, install all app's on that machine and work from
there. Not happy with that, but it is likely to be the only solution. And
perhaps it will be fast. On the laptop there is 4 G of RAM, so there will be
plenty available for the XP machine.

A real PITA for you!
b.t.w. did you run HP Printer Install Wizard for Windows 7: hppiw.exe ?

File name:hppiw.exe [1/1, 1.0M]
System requirements:OS support: Windows 7, 32/64 bit

Connectivity: USB and network printers.

Software: HP Full Feature product software installation is not required for
USB or Network connected printers, however Network printers do require basic
printer driver installation in order to use the Wizard.
Released:2011-03-18
Version:1.2
Compatibility:Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit), Microsoft Windows 7 Home Basic
(32-bit), Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (32-bit), Microsoft Windows 7
Professional (32-bit), Microsoft Windows 7 Enterprise (32-bit), Microsoft
Windows 7 Ultimate (32-bit), Microsoft Windows 7 Home Basic (64-bit),
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit), Microsoft Windows 7 Professional
(64-bit), Microsoft Windows 7 Enterprise (64-bit), Microsoft Windows 7
Ultimate (64-bit), Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)
Fix/Enhancement:This version of the HP Printer Install Wizard adds support
for additional products, now includes support for networked printers, and
the user interface now supports multiple languages.

Thanks, that looks promising. However, it says: "Network printers do require
basic printer driver installation in order to use the Wizard". And we're
talking about a network printer.
But I'll give it a try.
