Is there a free software utility that isn't a trial version that's good and reliable for opening zip, .rar, etc type files? I see winrar, winzip, and bitzipper are all only timed trial versions.

Try ZipGenius. I use Winrar myself and would prefer it over all others, probably because I've been using it for such a long time. My feeling is that if a piece of software increases my productivity, it's worth the investment.

You could try what roban said,
Or, there is also the free, and very common 7zip. It too can open .rar files.
Download: http://www.7-zip.org/

Also, a nice thing about it, is that you can point it at any file (.exe, .ink etc....) and it will try to open it. For example, I used 7zip to open the Windows Sever 2003 .exe Update file and get a few files inside I needed to be able to boot XP from a usb thumb drive.

Cheers,
Fire Cat

7zip for sure. It's easily the best free archiving utility.

I use an older "IZArc" v 3.81, build 1550.
47 archive formats, from 7-zip to zoo.

In storage there is 7-Zipx64.msi

My file manager works for me. There is a built in compression utility for the most common compression formats. I've grown so accustom to the File Manager that I am lost without it. To some degree I am dependent on using this File Manager. I can get the job done through Explorer however it takes longer than normal.

I've not had a need in downloading any compression tools in quite a long time. The only time I remember needing to download a compression tool was for the 7zip file format.

If I ever tried to drum up business on this forum, it would be for this file manager. There is not a day goes by that I do not use it. With that said, I'm the only one among my friends and family that does. I can't seem to talk anyone into using it and for the life of me I can't understand why. It takes a little getting used to but once you do your computer is so much simpler to maintain.

"Total Commander"
