Could anyone recommend a good launch program? I am looking for a
program that will allow my desktop icons to be sorted by category and
launched by clicking on the relevant icon. I have over 200 icons that I
use and the win 7 start menu is too long to allow quick identification
of the program I want to launch. I do not need any other features, just
a launcher.

WOT?! 200 icons?

I thought I had heard it all but obviously I hadn't.

Waiting now for someone to tell me that they have got 2K icons on their
desktop and that they don't fit it and how can he overcome this problem.

I think you SERIOUSLY need to do some housekeeping. Are you telling us
you USE 200 DIFFERENT programs on a REGULAR basis?

I use a docking program (you can drag icons onto it) that allows you
to set up custom tabs on the dock for categories of programs. My
categories, for example, are Network, Utilities, Art/3D, Media,
Internet, Office, Cell/iPod, and Books. I've got 108 different
program icons in these categoires.

It's called "sTabLauncher" - it's freeware and available at
http://www.sTabLauncher.com

Google Desktop? Tyope a shortcut and it finds the file.
It's been a while since I used it, but as I recall it worked pretty
well.

There's also one called Launchy, but I have never used it. Its advantage
was that it was available for Windows, OS X, and Linux.

Oh, and RocketDock, but as I recall Rocket Dock was pricey.

You also might look for FSL Launcher, but I don't know if that is still
current. Last I saw it hadn't been updated since 2007 and I've no idea
if it works in Windows 7.

Too much on the desktop extends boot time.

Look at free http://classicshell.sourceforge.net/ which changes Win 7 to an XP
Start Menu and then you can set up "Programs" in your choice of folders and
sub-folders.

Look at http://www.stardock.com/products/ for their selection of programs
including ObjectDock, WindowBlinds, and Fences.

Interesting. I might try it (with one of the alternate skins,
however...).

Thanks.

Perhaps I should not have tried to simplify the reason I wanted a
launcher! I don't think that 200 would fit on the desktop anyway. The
current set up that I have is about 20 icons on the desktop and if I
need to launch a program that does not appear on the desktop I have to
look in the start menu and sometimes look for the program files
themselves and start from there. I have tried to group programs on the
start menu to limit the amount of time wasted searching but that is
clumsy. If I use a launcher I can store any number of program icons and
have groups for graphic programs, maintenance programs etc.
Sorry if I misled you...

You know, I hope, that you can create a folder on your desktop and drag
and drop desktop shortcuts to similar programs into that folder so that
you eliminate the clutter on your desktop. I use the icon of the green
triangle with the white arrow on my desktop for such folders to group
similar programs.

But there is also the Desktop shortcut on the taskbar, if I may just
mention it. I have my taskbar positioned on the LHS of the screen (as
opposed to it being positioned by default on the bottom of the screen)
as I like to make maximum use of the widescreen monitors now in vogue.
This works fine for me as it releases quite a bit of the vertical top to
bottom real estate, the wide screen providing plenty of space
horizontally anyway.

You obviously don't understand how to use Win 7. You should investigate
pinning programs to the Tasbar and using the right click to pin and access
recently used files.
Failing that , typing the first few letters of a desired program or file
into the Search box will find what you need much faster than trying to
locate a shortcut on your Desktop or adding Recent Items to your Start menu
