Print Driver

I've got an old iP3000 Canon inkjet printer connected with a USB cable to a
Windows Media Center desktop. The drivers (and print applications) were
installed from the CD that came with the printer, and it has been working
fine for years. I now want to install it on a Win 7 x86 desktop.

Should I just connect it with the USB cable, and let (or see if) Windows
will automatically install it, and then install the printing applications
from the CD, or install updated drivers, if available from Canon, and then
install the print applications from the CD? Either way, the main thing is
that I also want the print applications.

(I did have an even older i560 Canon inkjet installed on a Vista, with the
original drivers from the i560 CD, with additional instructions from Canon,
so I figure the newer iP3000 will work on Win7.)

TIA

So why not go look at Canon's web site to see if they have a driver
download that says it's compatible with Windows 7?

I checked. Yep, they have Win7 drivers. They even have some of the
software (My Printer, Easy PhotoPrint EX).

Usually with USB devices, you install the driver first and connect the
device after, sometimes the installation program will tell you when to
connect your device.

Canon says they have the driver, but it's an add-on, and others have
reported that it doesn't work.

I just went there, and I see that the driver is the same file for all
OSs. Think I'll just try it out, regardless of reports by others that
it's just an add on and may not work. I'll install, then connect
printer.

Thanks

You might want to 1st try to just plug & play the printer. I was
surprised when I plugged in my HP2430, W7 found it, installed the
drivers and the rest was history. Similar thing with the Microtek 6000
scanner. IIRC, I had to download and install the scanner program,
however, I think the driver was installed by W7. Oh, and BTW, it was W7
64 bit.

From the Canon site under Windows7 operating system for iP3000 printer
it says:

This software is a module that expands the functionality of the printer
driver for Canon Inkjet printers. Your printer must be installed via
Microsoft Update before you download and use this module. By installing
this software, you can use the printer dr...

In other words, plug it in and select Windows Update as the source or
the driver.

I let Windows find and install the driver, and then installed the add-on.
Worked flawlessly.

Thanks, everyone.
