The easiest way to move them is to drag and drop.
Open Windows Explorer.
In the left pane ...
-Expand Libraries (click the little triangular carat on the left of Libraries).
-Under that expand Pictures
-Under that expand My Pictures
-If you wish, you can create a new folder under My Pictures by selecting My Pictures with the mouse and then right-click and choose New > Folder from the menu. Name the folder something descriptive such as, for example, "2012-05 Birthday".
-Now click on Desktop (at the very top of the left pane) so that it shows the desktop files in the right pane
In the right-pane, select the file or files that you want to move (to select multiple files, hold the ctrl key down while you select file 2, 3, etc) and then drag them to the "2012-05 Birthday" folder on the left (hold the left mouse button down and move the entries until the mouse hovers over the folder in the left pane and it highlights and a popup message says "Move to 2012-05 Birthday" then release the mouse button).
Back in the left pane, click on "2012-05 Birthday" and you should now see your files in the right pane (the left pane shows the folders and the right pane shows the contents of the selected folder)
Note: if you have preview pane enabled then Explorer has 3 panes and what I call the right pane is actually the middle pane
