OT--Windows Vista Problem

I posted this in Vista ng but they don't seem to get the participation this
ng gets and I don't see some of the talent there that's here. So, if it's ok
here goes:

HP laptop running Vista Home Premium 64 service pack 2, AMD 2.2 GHz dual
core, 4 GB RAM, 175 GB free on HD.
I've tried installing a couple software, the first was a freebie from a
furniture company and the latest is MS VISIO 2010 BETA and I get "error 1606
could not access network location %APPDATA%/"
I tried all the suggestions concerning registry concerns on MS knowledge
base and no change. Ran the auto-fix available on MS knowledge base and no
help. Went back through the registry entries again and same. Downloaded
Advanced System Optimizer, ran it and no change. Googled the error and
almost everything points to a registry problem and either directs to
knowledge base or repeats the steps listed there.
I have Office 2007 retail plus Office 2010 BETA installed so I thought that
might be causing the problem. Tried to uninstall 2007 and got the same error
message.
I don't know if this is related but when I create a new folder it will only
let me name it "new folder". I can delete it, but I can't give it any other
name or rename it, it just goes back to new folder.
Any help is appreciated, I am not against looking at the registry again as
sometimes a fresh set of eyes will see something, so if you have a thought
fire away.

I found a fix and am going to post it here in case it will help someone
else, possible it will help with Win 7 as well.
Logged on as Administrator and created a new Administrator account w/new
name. Gave it a password and checked to ensure all permissions were what
they should be. Logged off old account and logged in new Admin account.
Deleted old Admin. account, when asked whether to save files I checked yes
so I could look at them later. Got an error message saying account couldn't
be deleted while logged in, but after checking old Admin account was gone.
Logged off and rebooted in Safe Mode w/command prompt. You could possibly
start in regular Safe Mode, use Task Manager, New Task and do cmd.exe to do
the same thing. Checked root directory and users directory to make sure
nothing was left from old Admin account. Rebooted normally in Admin, checked
folder on desktop with files that were saved. Nothing of importance there,
so I deleted them all. I checked renaming files function and all is good.
Checked removal of Office 2007 and all is good. Installed Visio 2010 and all
is good.

This, combined with the inability to create a folder named anything other
than "New Folder" points to a serious instability issue. %APPDATA% is a
user variable that should point to...
APPDATA=C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming
replacing <username> with your currently logged in account.

This variable is created at login time. All current variables can be
veiwed, along with their values by opening a CMD box and typing set [Enter].

Most variables, as well as if they are system or user can be seen if you
right-click "Computer" and choose properties, then Advanced System
Properties, then environment variables.

Do you see a value for APPDATA if you open a CMD box and execute the set
command? What is it pointing to?

1606 is an error returned by MSIEXEC (the main process for running MSI based
installers which includes many from MS as well as those packaged with WISE).

I did check this before I found a fix and it was pointing to
c:\users\username\appdata\roaming
Checked again now and it's the same.

Thanks for the tip, I did get the problem solved. See my previous post for
details.

Microsoft had a policy a while back that if you had a .edu email address you
could buy Windows 7 Home Premium for I think $89. A buddy of mine did
purchase a copy.

Thanks for the link. The version listed is Windows 7 Professional which has
everything Home Pro does plus and is $64.95, which is a really good price.
Only think it doesn't say is if it is 64 Bit. There's no distinction on MS
web site so I'm assuming all the versions are 64 bit. Only thing that makes
me wonder is I see some listed on ebay that are 32 Bit only.
Can anyone enlighten me on this?

When I bought my Windows 7 upgrade it contained both 32 and 64 bit CD's.
When upgrading it would tell you if you could use the 64 bit version.
