No https with IE8, IE8 will not re-install due to cryptographic service

Hi all,

since a few days I'm not able to access https sites with IE8 (although FF works fine!). Also programs I suspect to use the IE stack will not connect to https sites.
When I try to re-install IE8 it stops, complaining it's not able to verify the image, and asking me to see if the Cryptographic service is running. It is!

Somehow I suspect the KB976902 update, which installed (after two failed attempts) on February 1st.

Anyone got any thoughts on this?
