NetBt error

This is kind of strange. Every few days I get "A duplicate name has been detected on the TCP network. The IP address of the computer that sent the message is in the data. Use nbtstat -n in a command window to see which name is in the Conflict state." I am using Windows 7 HP, I do have 2 computers in the homegroup but they have very different names, there is a network printer also with a unique name. This happens usually 3 or 4 times over the course of hours, then there are no more errors for a few days. I have tried renaming the computer, but that has had no effect. Looking for any suggestions or troubleshooting tips.

You should assign each computer on your network its own IP address.

Names are different than IP addresses. Names are simply descriptive. Computers communicate through the use of IP addresses. If you do not assign an IP address, the network will assign one for your computer. This can sometimes lead to more than one computer being assigned the same address.

Thanks for the reply. On my home network I am assigning IP addresses to each computer. For some reason my cheap wireless router stopped functioning as a DHCP server some months ago. Anyway my notebook is Named Chris-Notebook it has an IP of 192.168.1.111 the other computer on the network has an IP of 192.168.1.145 and the printer has an IP of 192.168.1.220.

Out of curiosity, have you tried reseting the modem or atleast rebooting it? Sometimes this helps.

Thanks for the help Clifford. I have reset the modem. I believe that the issue is related to NetBios over TCP. I doubt that I need this yet for some reason my NIC had this selected. I went into the TCP/IP settings for the card and under advanced tab, and then the WINS tab I deselected enable NetBios over TCP or something like that. I will keep an eye on it for a few days but it looks like everything still works as it should. Thanks again.
