There must be some way to generate a shortcut without adding "- shortcut" to the name. It seems to me that I was able to set up XP to avoid this, but that was some years ago, and I've forgotten. Now I have Win7, and I want to get rid of that silly suffix again. Can anyone help?
...Regards, Russ

Hi Russ - Welcome to w7forums

I found this after a quick search - Remove Shortcut Text When Creating Shortcuts

Luckily I don't need this, my file manager doesn't add the text "- Shortcut" when creating a shortcut.

  1. Start Registry Editor.
  2. Locate the following registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
  3. Modify the data value of the Link value to be 00 00 00 00.
  4. Restart the computer.
Always be careful when editing the registry as it is possible to damage your system. If you are not comfortable with that method you could try the "do it 6 times in a row" method listed in this MS article ...

Hi Russ.
Have you any problem, now, with the "Pin" option in Windows 7.?
The linki was to "legacy cersions of windows. It is alleged that it destroys some of the link to options and creates duplicate shortcuts??

Fwiw, the attached is what I use on a new installation, courtesy of Brink on another site. It needs a reboot, but works like a charm for me.

Davehc, what does the zip you attached do? Does it hide the little arrow on links, as the name suggests?

I use Ultimate Windows Tweaker v2.1 from the Windows Club.

It has a LOT of tweaks and such, it's a standalone program, you just copy and paste to the C Drive and run it from there.

Quote:
We are pleased to release our Ultimate Windows Tweaker v 2.0 for Windows 7 and Windows Vista. Ultimate Windows Tweaker is a freeware TweakUI Utility for tweaking and optimizing Windows 7 & Windows Vista, 32-bit & 64-bit. It can simply be downloaded and used as a portable application to customize your Windows to meet your requirements. With judicious tweaking, it can make your system faster, more stable, and more secure with just a few mouse clicks. The tweaker detects whether you have Windows 7 or Windows Vista installed and accordingly offers you the relevant tweaks only.
UPDATE: 12.12.09 – The latest version is Ultimate Windows Tweaker v 2.1. It includes bug-fixes and may be downloaded from the link mentioned below.

The tweaker is a 345KB .exe file which does not require an install, but yet packs over 150 tweaks & settings. Simply download the zip file, extract its contents and run Ultimate Windows Tweaker. Please don’t detach Empty Icon from executable’s root, the Empty Icon is copied to system directory and referred in runtime. The tweaker has been designed by my MVP collegue Ramesh Kumar for The Windows Club.
