I just looked in my user folder>AppData>Local folder in Windows 7 Professional and I found the following empty folders in the attached screenshot. Are these safe to be deleted ? I've heard that MSE makes weird snamed folders like this. Funny thing is I don't have MSE installed. I'm using Kaspersky Internet Security 2011. Thanks everyone.

Those are Globally Unique IDentifiers (GUID), possibly Class IDs (CLSID) of which you will find many in the registry, but why they are in your local storage I don't know. What is under those folders? If they are empty (really empty - be sure to enable viewing of all system files and folders to be sure) then yes you can delete them.

If not empty then post what under them so we can have a look. It's likely some program you are running that is generating them.

BTW appdata is a system area and most users shouldn't really be messing in there but for the most part it is storage for application settings and temporary files/folders..

Thanks TrainableMan. After I posted this I opened Folder Options and unchecked the Hide Protected Operating System Files. The other options I already had unchecked. The folders are emty, so I guess it's deletion and Ccleaner time.

Hi everybody. I have exactly the same problem.
many of these folders in my AppData\local folder.
It seams to have someting to do with the updates.
I have nearly the same count of folders than i have updates.
But not exactly ....
I cant find the IDs in the registry ... so no luck here also.

MSE is installed ....

regards

I have a feeling these empty folders are from MSE & Windows Defender. I didn't have these in Vista, so it's obviously something Microsoft needs to fix in W7 Service Pack 1. Hopefully, but I'm not holding my breath on it. Even after deleting these empty folders more appear daily. Definitely a Windows 7 bugm as even with showing all folders and protected operating system files still shows the folders as empty. I've also got Windows set to remove temporary files after 1 day, not there setting of 7 days which wastes more drive space.

I do not have MSE in my computer and have disabled Windows Defender and I get these empty files as well. I deleted them but did see thet more were created, but didn't think to check if they were created just after the last windows update.

draceena. We both both fold@home. I've noticed repeatably after deleting these mysterious folders daily. 2 or 3 new one's appear daily. I'm beginning to think somebody at Stanford's F@h need's to address this.

Could it be those are temporary folders, meant to be placed in the Temp folder?
