My PC is running slow. What can I do?

Hi out there, I'm asking maybe a stupid question but recently my computer with Windows7 is running very slow and freezing sometimes and this drives me crazy.

Maybe I have a virus, maybe something else, I don't know... How to solve this issue??

What anti virus program do you have running? Can you post some computer specs.

There are many reasons for this slowing but these are most important:


* Low Memory. Having enough memory can make the difference in speed. Eg., Windows XP runs very well with 2Gig or more, and well enough for most people with 1G, but a PC runs slow with less. Adding memory can be the least expensive and yet one of the most significant ways to speed up PC.

* Unused Programs. Programs you do not use or do not need, require space on your hard drives, and in memory - making computer run slow, and possibly startup slow. See your Task Manager for more details.

* Unused Files, Browser tracks, Folders, Registry Keys, etc. Download a program that will delete all these stuff. I'm with mil shield http://www.milincorporated.com/milshield2.html from years and it detects and removes all you want in your computer, and not removes useful files.

* Disk Errors. Your PC spends much time reading and writing data to the hard drives. Slow computer performance can be caused by badly arranged or erroneous files on your hard disk. I use Error Doctor for these disk errors.

* Virus infection. These are small programs, using resources on YOUR computer, which you never asked for! Keep antivirus software up to date. I'm with AVG http://www.avg.com/eu-en/homepage from years.

* Driver conflict. Some old drivers cause problems. Just download newer ones.

If you can convince TorrentG that AVG does not cause BSOD's with Windows 7, I will concider trying AVG again. Personally I did try AVG a few months back and after 48 hours of computer slowness and split second freezing, AVG had to go.

I'm actually working on a few threads right now where it is possible AVG is the culprit.

To be honest though, it's been a while where I could say definitely that someone's machine was bsoding because of it, without doubt. There are some recent cases where it was removed and things went well, but other things had also been removed along with it.

So I think it is slightly possible that AVG is getting a little better in this aspect.

One thing is for sure still though. It does still freeze and slow down systems rampantly. In almost every instance where I asked someone to uninstall it, directly in their next post is always a comment such as, "Wow, it's so much more responsive. I hadn't realized"...or something along those lines.

Did you buy the computer with Windows 7 installed on it, or did you do an "Upgrade" install of Windows 7?

If you did an "Upgrade" install, that may be causing the slowdown as most users have found that upgrading from Vista to Windows 7 without doing a clean or custom install has been causing many slowdown and freeze issues.

If not, what TorrentG is suggesting may be the answer.

After you have made sure it isn't a virus, download and run CCleaner. The first icon in this product will help free up harddrive space by deleting old logs, temporary files, cookies, etc. The second tab will clean up broken links in your registry (when it asks if he should back them up first it is always safest to say yes, then after you save the registry allow it to delete them).

Sure looks that way, but I agree with all of the above. Plenty of RAM, a clean install versus an upgrade, and cleaning all of the junk files out of your computer will speed it up a lot.

Another thing, since we don't know if the computer is newer, with Windows 7 as OEM or not, is your recovery partition. If your computer has one, and all of the above does not help, a reinstall of your OS can work wonders. It has helped me on a couple of occasions.
