How to make IE x64 the default browser?

Now that a 64 bit Flash player is available, I'd like my Windows 7 x64
machine to use IE x64 by default instead of IE x86. The "Default
Programs" utility just shows IE without specification or choice. Does
anyone know how to make Windows open IE x64 when I click on a link?

From within IE, Tools, Internet Options, Programs, "Make Default"?

Hi, Evan.

> From within IE, Tools, Internet Options, Programs, "Make Default"?

When I do that, the Programs tab STILL says, under "Default web browser":
"Internet Explorer (64-bit) cannot be the default browser."

We've discussed this (here?) many times and the conclusion has always been
that we mere mortals cannot change the default from the 32-bit IE, even in
IE9.

My (human) memory tells me that I DID successfully change it long ago, but
I've lost the secret and haven't been able to find it again. I THINK it was
an entry in the Registry where I changed the path to the executable from
"Program Files (x86)" to "Program Files", but I haven't found that
location - and maybe I misremembered it. :>(

If you find a way, please let us all know!

How about:

You can change the program windows uses by default to open with
different file extensions.
Here is how:
a. Click on Start and go to Default Programs.
b. Click on Associate a file type or protocol always open in a
specific program.
c. Browse to all the extensions where internet explorer is set as
default and then click onchange.
d. Now Click on browse and then go to location C:\Program
Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe and select it.
e. Click Ok and then Close.
f. Click Save.

I see you've been answered but I'm wondering why you'd want to? AFAIK
it doesn't make any difference which browser is used, does it?

No real reason. Because I don't like being told I can't. :-)

He seems to wish to run the 64-bit version of Flash, which I imagine
won't run under 32-bit IE.

Like you, I'm not sure it matters much.

And now that I have refreshed my headers, I just saw Crash's reply...

Obviously he's a true scientist - or just stubborn :-)

I don't know if that is true, or not, but the latest Flash runs in
either of my IE browsers. Only one Flash is shown in my Programs and
Features list, the 64 bit version. So either the 64 bit Flash
installation also includes a 32 bit version or the 64 bit Flash runs in
the 32 bit IE (not likely).

It only matters because I have had conflicts in the past when using script.

Looks like it does matter, then.

Thanks for the info.
