After running my new notebook for a day & a half, with no problems, I decided to go for it. I downloaded the GPU3 Client, and it looks as though it's rolling. The NVIDIA kicked right in, it's currently running at around 209ns/day, and is already at 1000/50000, 2.5% complete, only minutes into the job.

For what I'm used to seeing, it's flying. I also wrote down my previous score, so I'll know fast how I'm doing, as compared to before.

I do have a question, do I need to leave it's display on, or does it do better with the screen off? If I don't need the display, then I'll close it.

That display, with that cluster, and those flying numbers, looks good in the dark!

That notebook sure runs cool while folding, temps around 50C, and is running at a steady speed. Until I go to bed, I'll peek at it some, I'm mainly watching for any signs of overheating. The fan is running underneath it, so that should help.

This GPU3 client, is this a new one? I ask because I hadn't seen it before. The ones that I saw were GPU/GPU2, the high performance CPU's, and the beta versions. For the time being, I don't want to run the betas.

And how do I monitor video card temps, if that's necessary?

Cat, as I mentioned earlier in the other thread, SpeedFan monitors the temps of all your hardware.

You can use a couple of programs, both of which are free.

First there is GPU-Z from the guys who developed CPU-Z and then there's S.I.W., which I know you're familiar with.

GPU-Z is a lightweight utility designed to give you all information about your video card and GPU.

Yeah cat, I wouldn't do too much gpu folding until you monitor the temps a little.

GPU-Z says my GPU temp is 63C. Is that too high?

If so, once this job finishes (83% done), I can install another client.

Not too high IMHO for a laptop. That card probably doesn't have it's own fan. If it did there is something else I could recommend.

I've been folding the smp-2 client on the Dell. Cpu is between 68-71C with a Targus laptop cooler.

I don't know if the GPU has it's own fan, but it's well ventilated (three vents on the bottom, one on the side). Also, it's sitting on Thermaltake Massive23 LX cooler that I bought with it. For the price ($24.99, regularly $34.99), it was the best one that I could find. And it has a 3 year warranty.

Rosewill had one, but I figured it best to choose a name brand over a private label one. However, I'm not putting down Rosewill, as they have some 5 egg rated products.

I'm going to finish this job, then I have a couple of other things that I need to do, then will resume folding. I just want to make sure that it runs OK before I use my Anytime Upgrade Key to Pro, as if I had to RMA it, the key would no longer be good. It's tied to the key of the installed OS, it can't be used on another one.

If anyone has a better suggestion for a choice of folding client, let me know. There's a new one that uses both the CPU & GPU, but a quad core CPU is recommended. I chose not to buy a quad because of the potential heat issues, although if it were a desktop, I wouldn't have considered anything less.

It'll be interesting to see the points that I get from this job. Plus, I'm using the standard CPU client on my desktop, but don't expect miracles from it. There's just not enough CPU under the hood.
