Nixie tubes, IIRC. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nixie_tube)

Were those used in battery operated devices? Seems to me they would
have used way too much current for batteries.

I remember Wang(?) calculators with Nixie tubes. They were connected
to something behind the wall, but I never saw what.
