Locked out

My laptop came with Vista. When I was finished computing, I would
close my computer. The next time I open it, I get an icon in the
middle of the screen that says......Locked or something similar. I
had to click on the icon and it would continue to the desktop.

I don't remember how I stopped this but it was not very intuitive, for
me anyway. Well I upgraded my computer to Win7 and it does the same
thing.

I am not using a password. How can I stop Win7 from displaying this
icon, and what the hell is it doing there anyway? As far as I can
tell, if anyone else opened the computer all they have to do is to
click on the icon and use it like it never existed. It seems entirely
useless and very annoying.

Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options
Choose what closing the lid does

It's only useless if you don't set a password :-)

Control Panel->View by: ... icons->Power Options->Require a password on
wakeup [left pane]->Password protection on wakeup [section]->(o) Don't
require a password [check]
