I have in my c:\users\name\appdata\local - loads of directores consisting of long lists of letters and numbers. These are all empty. My question is - are they necessary and can I simply delete them without my computer going up into a ball of flame?

Yes you can delete them. I do it all the time. They are temporary folder when they are created anyway.

The folowing list is folders that I have and just deleted myself. It hasn't been that long ago that I deleted them or the list would have been longer.
