Links (to network shares) disappearing

hello guys
I already asked on the italian newsgroup but I didn't get any reply
let me try worldwide in english

there is a windows7 machine, 64bit, with all updates installed, system
"clean", no viruses/trojans/bullshit on it (it's used to work, not to play)

what happens? the customer has several links on the desktop, links to some
shared folders and subfolders on the server data disk that is mapped on
startup as disk S:
sometimes, quite frequently, all these links disappear (from the
desktop) and the lady must rebuild all of them one-by-one

these links are all used everyday, several times during the week, so it's
not possible that they are deleted by any clean-up procedure (like it was
on windows xp after 60 days)

I already tried to set them as read-only but they disappear as well

the problem was present in the past, in a local area network (fast) and
also now, in a brand new office with gigabit LAN

any help is appreciated

Is the entire desktop wiped clean of all of its shortcuts, or is it
only the server shortcuts that disappear while the non-server
shortcuts stay safe? When the server shortcuts disappear, can they be
found in the recycle bin?

no, the desktop is NOT wiped, just the shortcuts, all the rest is ok
no, they are NOT in the bin

this is the only pc in the LAN that has this problem
I'm thinking to reinstall it from scratch but first I'd like to know
whether this is a well-known issue or not

I take it to mean that items on his desktop (such as folders) that
aren't shortcuts weren't wiped.

Cool, thanks. I was hoping to further distinguish whether all
shortcuts, or just server shortcuts, were affected, but he didn't feel
like elaborating. Regardless, I don't have a clue what's causing it.

"shortcuts to the server" are sometimes called "network Shares". Have you
verified that your computer can "See" the server?

Possibly the destop is built before the system can see the shares.

That's merely my guess, of course.

yes, could be, but I'm expecting an icon with a red cross or a warning
message or any other type of advice, not the deletion of the icon itself
