Oracle released a update for Java late last night. Use this link to verify your version here. If you've got Windows 7 x64 run it in both versions of IE9. http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

I am not too deep into programming, but I do wonder why, after so many years since Java was first compiled, what exactly the profusion of updates consist of.

It's basically because Microsoft made Windows secure when Vista came out. The hacker's go after Flash Player/Shockwave Player, Java and other web based software.Adobe issued patches Monday, MS last week & yesterday and Oracle late last night. It's obviouse they all put patches out to stop that new Stuxnet-like threat.
