Hello Experts,

I have been trying to reduce images in Irfanview v. 4.32 and keep them
at a fixed size.

Supposedly using Shift and L together fixes the image size.
It's not working for me.

TIA

And what did Irfanview support tell you when you contacted them about a problem with their product?

They told me that they were out celebrating the New Year. ;-)

Digital images have two sort of conflicting attributes.
Size and resolution. A display and/or a printer has similar issues.
The size is important, and the resolution is often critical.
For instance a display that provides a 1920x1080 screen resolution and a
printer that uses 8-1/2x11 paper, with resolution in DPI.
The printed size can be changed, as can the resolution in pixels
(Display)or DPI (Printer). The image to be displayed or printed may
have a pixel count higher than the display or smaller.
The printed image may need to be scaled up or down to meet the size
requirements. The same is true of the displayed image.

A major factor is that a specific image file and type may or may not
contain size information. The file, sort of by nature, does contain the
pixel information. Irfan usually uses the pixel information over any
size information. To add to the problem, applications using the file can
ignore the size information, and automatically scale the image for
display, printing, or inclusion in a document section, frame, or "box".

Perhaps if you explain what you are trying to do in more detail, you may
get a usable and specific answer to your problem. It sounds like what
you are trying to do is to reduce the pixel count of the image,
and leave the size information the same. (Reduce the resolution in other
words .)

I.E 1024W by 768H pixel resolution image
to be printed or displayed in a 3x5 inch area.
The printer resolution might be as little as 300 DPI, or as high as 4800
DPI with multi-pass printing.

You'll probably want to wait until Tuesday before doing anything they advise :-)

Why oh why do people say "it's not working" and then give no details?
We aren't all psychic, you know. Do you *really* think we can just
guess what you saw on your screen? When asking for help, use your
head and provide the information you might reasonably think would be
needed to understand and solve your problem.

It also helps to explain clearly what you're trying to do. You say
you want to "reduce images and keep them at a fixed size", but if you
reduce them they're obviously *not* going to be at the original size.
What exactly are you trying to do -- reduce the size but keep the
proportions, crop off parts but keep the remainder at its original
size, something else?

Many of us here -- including me, believe it or not -- enjoy helping.
But you have to do your part and *ask* for help in a reasonably
intelligent way.

OPen the image file in Irfanview,
Go the Image button,
Choose Resize, then resize, save the resized image.
That's it.

I use Irfan every day for photo work but can't figure out
what you are trying to do.

There is no Shift-L in Irfanview. You want Control-R, which brings up a
pane on which you can select or specify the new size. (And if you don't
already do so, I strongly recommend you use Save As to save the reduced
size. Reducing the size loses image data.)

He's trying to change the pixel x pixel dimensions of the image.

As to why, he doesn't say. If he wants to see the whole image on the
screen, he doesn't need to reduce the image size, as Irfanview has a Fit
To Screen option. Maybe he wants a smaller size for e-mail or posting.

NB that image size doesn't change when you change resolution: a pixel is
a pixel is a pixel.
