You could probably import the keys and data, but unless the program they
refer to is installed, it won't make much difference (and the program
installation would probably create the necessary keys anyhow). Simply
copying the program and importing the keys most likely will not work.

I don't see any reason why not, though I haven't tried it. (Whether
it has the desired effect depends on the program that will read it.)

I did just try exporting a key from the Windows 7 registry, and the
format is the same as for XP.

Hi Stan and Tom

Thanks for Your answer.

The app is my very old PSP 7 and I cant find my installation cd.
PSP runs fine, but it complains at startup about the missing reg. keys.
So I guess it will be fine to export it from my XP machine and
import it to Win 7.

Best regards

The registry file formats are compatible (they are just text files),
however the tree branches may not be exactly identical.

Sorry to say that it will not work. Bringing in a hive from another OS and
installing it into a different OS the first thing that will happen is that the hive
in question will not hook and it will be left and marked as an orphan. Try it and
then let us know what happened.

Hello Asger-P,

I have four Try and Buy versions of PSP7; 7.00, 7.01, 7.02 and 7.04

If you want any or all of them I can upload to Mediafire. Each file is
about 30MB. Because they are evaluation versions, I think you only
have to plug in your serial number to activate - I never installed any
PSP version until I bought X2.

Well, maybe.

Usually a program install does four things (at least), though not
necessarily in this order:

1. Copy its own files to a subfolder of C:\Program Files

2. Register its own DLLs with the system

3. Write necessary Registry keys

4. Create shortcuts in Start Menu and perhaps on desktop

Merely copying files and Registry entries leaves out step 2, and the
details of how to do that vary from one application to another. If
you're lucky, your application won't need to register any DLLs.

NO ONE is thinking of that, except you. I guess you misunderstood
the meaning of "import" in the OP's initial query and followup.
