Icons Missing on Install of Nero

I have a slight issue that is really buggin me. I have a copy of Windows 7 RC (Build 7100) and everything was working fine until I installed my purchased copy of Nero 9 on it.

While it was installing the screen refreshed a couple of times and then all of a sudden I saw that some of my applications that I had pinned to the task bar had changed from their native icon to just a blank white page (see attached screenshot).

Now this is also reflected in All Programs too. I don't like the look of what has happened so I have un-installed Nero hoping things would go back to the way they were (haha) no it didn't.

I have tried to do a system restore only to get this error message (see attached screenshot).

So basically I am left with icons to some programs that have magically gone missing.

Does anyone know what needs to be done to get my icons back.

Let's try re-building the icon cache, and hopefully that will solve it

I have just done the command sequence that you have quoted to above with my fingers crossed only to find out that it didn't work .

Have you got anything else up your sleeve? I have also had the same problem on Windows Vista Ultimate, so it isn't a Windows 7 Bug.

Did it happen after installing Nero that time too?

If you unpin and re-pin them, does that work - or are you able to manually reassign the icon back?

I am not too sure. I had the white icon issue on Windows Vista but didn't know what was causing it. Now it has happened on Windows 7 in-front of my eyes I am pretty sure Nero was the cause of the problem in Vista too.

I have un-pinned them and pinned them back to no avail either. They are also white in the All Programs Menu (see attached screenshot).

Where do we go from here? I have been doing some Google Searching but it isn't turning out to be too helpful.

If you right click on some of the blank icons, are they all shortcut files or exe files? It could be that the file extensions are messed up if rebuilding the icon cache doesn't work.

If you click "change icon" under properties, do you see the original icon there?

I have right-clicked on the Nitro PDF Professional Icon in All Programs and the results are in the attached screenshot. I have also opened up a few other programs that have the icons that are in the screenshot too.

On the blank icon, go to properties > shortcut > change icon. Does it let you reset the icon that way?

I really would like to report back and say yes but I cannot as it is not true. See the attached screenshot please.

Does it let you change the icon if the icon is unpinned? I'm really baffled by this problem.
