Hello,

I am using Windows 7 (64 bit) Home Edition.

I have found that when I shut down the computer and restart my desktop screen icons are jumbled up and reset to the top left hand corner. I continually have to keep resetting the icons in the right position every shutdown.

Is there any way of stopping this happening?

Nevica

I don't know of a native way of stopping this. Mine only tend to get re-arranged after the rare occasions of watching a video or playing a game (damn Angry Birds!!).

However, I use Desktop Restore by Jamie O'Connell. It adds Save, Restore and Custom Save/Restore options to your Desktop Context Menu.

Set up your icons as you want, click Save option. Next time they mess up, click the Restore option.

All you need to do is setup the desktop icons in the way you want them. Once that's done Logoff and log back on. Then go into Safe Mode by pressing F8 on your keyboard as your pc is starting and select Safe Mode. Do the same thing and also before logging off right-click and select Screen Resolution and change that. Screen Resolution defaults too 800x600 in Safe Mode. If your monitor is a wide-screen i/e:16.9 ratio, you won't get a option for 1920x1080 or above, but select one ending in 1080. Now logoff and back on again.

Essentially W7 tries to make sure your icons are always in the displayable area ...

It should remember your icon locations but this often happens if you have a projector or dual monitors because W7 tries to make the icons fit the wrong screen. Right-click on your desktop and select resolution - make sure the right display, where all your icons are, is monitor 1.

It will also happen if your display switches through a lower resolution. You can see this effect manually if you switch to say the old 800x600. I don't have an answer for this except to suggest making sure you have the latest video driver for your machine or that you place your icons in a position that will be visible even in the lowest resolution.
