I have a HP laserjet 4000 printer and when I use the HP universal driver my resolution goes to 600 and my speed goes to 8ppm. My OS is windows 7 Pro x32. Someone posted awhile back that the universal driver for Win 7 x64 doesn't have that issue. Can I use that driver on my x32 system?

You can find the HP Driver "HP Universal Print Driver - Direct IP Printing" for Windows 7 32-bit in the list HERE.

There are also some pdf documentation files including "HP Universal Print Driver and Microsoft Driver Isolation Mode F.A.Q.s" which might offer some settings/solution to help your slow printing issue. I haven't checked myself but that's where I would start if it were me.
