I am running W7 64 bit and for the last two years have had no problem with
the HP All in One Printer software.
Suddenly, the shortcut icon has lost its HP colours and reverted to a
vanilla MS icon. When clicked I get a window saying that this program is
incompatible with my version of W 7. But I have not changed anything. I have
searched HP and other websites for a fix or upgrade but with no luck. Is
anyone out there able to suggest my next move?

With luck you may be able to get things working properly again by using
a System Restore point that was created prior to when the problem first
showed up.

Thank-you GBM!
I have never used system Restore with W7 although I used it frequently with
all previous MS OS's.
So it never occurred to me to use it. IT WORKED!
I am so grateful, please take a bow

Glad things worked out for you.

Only other thing I would consider, if it were my PC, would be to do a
manual Microsoft Update and see if the problem comes back. This way an
automatic update does not creep in and possibly cause the problem again
when you least expect it.

If the problem stays away after all updates are finished then I'd
probably tend to forget it and leave well enough alone. If the problem
does come back after the updates then it's time to track down which of
the new updates is causing the problem and remove it (possibly with
another restore point reload) as well as block it in the update menu so
it does not get loaded again at a later date.
