I have a Pavilion dv7-3173nr laptop and a WD GoFlex 3TB drive. Works
fine on USB, but the HP won't recognize it when connected to the combo
esata / USB port using a powered esata / usb cable . Using the same
port when it's USB Is fine. Not showing in Drive Management, and I see
no BIOS options relating to esata. the light at the end of the cable
lights, but not seeing anything spin.
Under IDE / ATA/ATAPI controllers in Device Manager (WIndows 7 64 ) I
only see 3 ATA channels and Standard AHCI SATA Controller.

Win 7 64 home.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

A 3TB drive, so I assume that it's a 3.5" desktop drive inside, rather
than a 2.5" laptop drive? The 3.5" drives require outside 12V power. USB
ports can't deliver 12V, so I assume combo eSATA/USB ports can't either.
Are you attempting to power the drive through the ports, or through a
separate power adapter?

Yes, it's a 3.5 desktop drive in the case.

Crap. I think you're right.

http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-FreeAg...4528673&sr=1-1
FreeAgent GoFlex Desk drive.

"Or upgrade to FireWire 800 or powered eSATA by pairing the drive with
the appropriate GoFlex upgrade cable. (Upgrade cables sold
separately.)"

http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-FreeAg...4528872&sr=1-1
Part of the GoFlex Storage System: works with all GoFlex and GoFlex
Pro ultra-portable drives

And I'm betting the GoFlex Desk drive isn't included. Let me confirm
with Seagate

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ESATAp

"There exist two versions of this port. The first one, usually built
in laptops, provides only +5V through USB connection.

The other one has additional two pads, placed against the plug's
"horns", which provide +12V. The second one is needed if one wants
to plug a 3.5 in. HDD or 5.25 in. optical drive to eSATAp port.

Also cables are built with or without +12V support. This leads to
customers confusion as they are usually unaware about the details
of +12V power delivery."

My guess is, since your drive has a capacity of 3TB, it's probably
a 3.5" drive that needs +12V. And the laptop doesn't have +12V available
in this case. If you try a 2.5" external drive with ESATAp type connector,
perhaps the +5V your laptop has to offer, can power the drive.

As it stands now, you're going to need a power source for the drive.

There is a section on ESATAp here as well.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sata#eSATAp

*******

I'd hoped to be able to refer to an ESATAp spec, but haven't managed
to find it yet.

The drive should come with its own AC adapter, go look in the box it
should be inside.

Do you have that drive turned on in the bios?? If you have 4 sata ports and
the esata drive in on port 4 you have to turn on port 4 for the esata drive
to work in esata mode. It will work in USB mode.

Well, the drive does, for USB. But for USB / esata combo powered, no
power cable is used. But, unfortunately, the cable is incompatible
with my drive, as Seagate finally told me
