I guess this is a security issue. Just be carefull if you receive any mail from a Hotmail address even if it's from an address of someone you know.
I got an email from a mate but from the header knew it was not something he'd say and deleted it.
Later got another email from another known contact that looked more legit but as I went to open it my virus checker clamped down on it as infected.

So just be aware maybe the hotmail database has been corrupted.

It sounds like one of your friends has been infected and it's either sending out an e-mail from their account to the address book... or more confusingly, spoofing the e-mail to appear from random address book members.

Not too long ago, I started getting spammy e-mails with virus attachments send to me from a friends hotmail account. I got in touch to let him know, but it turns out the problem was with a mutual friend who had been infected.

Thankfully most people have AV scanners now .

Yeah, It only happened the once and the two seperate friends I got bad mail from could not possibly have any knowledge of each other.. One being an 68yo mate I've known forever from work and mutual interests and the other a 45yo inner city cafe's and movies type gal.

Another friend of mine also got bad (on the same day) mail from this same mate as would also be on the others address list.

Most of my virus problems, back when I was using XP Pro exclusively, was when opening mail. At the time, all that I had was Avast covering my back, and several times, I got burned. Now, I scan suspect emails with MBAM & MSE, so that's been of help to me.

But my email virus problems were with strangers, not acquaintances, except on one occasion, that was from my stepson. He watches all kinds of porn, and socializes all over the net, even in the deepest corners, and doesn't believe in running a AV, period. When he lived with us a few years back, Time Warner cut his service off because of it. Now, all that he uses are public networks, and whoever he can "piggyback" off of using "We-Fi", so he flat out doesn't give a damn. But I told him that's not being considerate of others, he laughed at me, saying if it's free, why care? I told him that's the equivalent of having HIV (or AIDS), and not using protection for the sake of others. Again, he told me that if he had it, what difference does it make? We don't see eye to eye on things that often.

I can only say that I'm glad that I don't depend on the public networks to browse the web, and retrieve my emails. I would have no choice but to scan every page, attachment, whatever lands my way. But as far as my emails goes, I do that anyway, you never know who may burn you these days.

My mate is very computer literate and has protection. The other friend also has some type of protection just cant think of the name off the top of my head.
Th email that came from my mate although it was his address had a subject header which I just knew would not have come from him so never even opened it.

The one from the 2nd friend almost caught me out as it was something she would be likely to say but my virus checker caught it anyway.

So generally the subject header is a giveaway for me even before I open any mail. I've never had legitimate mail from my contacts that were infected.Their outboxes showed no record of mail being sent to me on the day I got the dodgy ones.
