It is not possible to "upgrade" from XP to Windows 7. You must do a clean or "custom" install as Windows 7 calls it.

Just boot from the install DVD and follow the prompts from there. It's best to delete the old partitions, all of them and then begin your install of Windows 7 on a non-formatted drive. Windows 7 will take care of it from there.

texture, welcome to the forum! Nibiru is correct, if you follow his instructions, you should be fine.

One thing that you may want to consider, is to backup what you already have, just in case you may need it in the future. Sometimes, there are driver issues that cannot be solved (especially on older computers, anything that was built pre-Vista).

Also, you need to find all of the drivers that you can for your computer, if no Win 7 ones are available, Vista ones works in many cases. To inventory your hardware to obtain drivers, open your Device Manager, spread the tree out, you'll see the names of your components. Use Bing or Google to research every component, if possible, try to use drivers for the same brand of computer, the latest ones possible. Make sure that you get the correct (32 or 64) bit drivers.

Save these drivers to either a thumb drive or a CD/DVD, or both. Unless you cannot find a particular driver for a component, or are having negative issues with one, avoid Windows Update for this, as it oftens gives you older drivers than you have.

If you need further assistance, post back, there's many members willing to help, sometimes it may take a while to get an answer, but the percentage of answered & solved threads have improved since I first arrived here. Some members simply doesn't check their thread as solved.

Best of Luck,
Cat
