Getting video file properties in Windows Explorer

Windows Explorer seems to be able to tell certain properties of certain
video files which it can then display in a detailed display. For
example, Explorer seems to be able to display the length of video files
in the AVI, WMV, or MP4 formats, but not in the MKV or FLV formats.
There are other formats that it may or may not work with too. How can
you get Explorer to work with these other sorts of files? I've got all
of the appropriate codecs installed that lets you watch these files
under Windows.

I believe it's the shmedia.dll file that provides the functionality
you're asking about, and I believe that library only natively supports
AVI, WMA, WMV, ASF and WAV files.

Also some good info in the link below, specifically for Win 7. They
talk about enabling/disabling preview support for other file formats,
including mkv. I haven't tried it myself since I always completely
disable the preview functionality.

Let us know what you decide to do.

Thanks, good info, but I couldn't get it to work after modifying the
registry.
