I believe it's the shmedia.dll file that provides the functionality
you're asking about, and I believe that library only natively supports
AVI, WMA, WMV, ASF and WAV files.

Also some good info in the link below, specifically for Win 7. They
talk about enabling/disabling preview support for other file formats,
including mkv. I haven't tried it myself since I always completely
disable the preview functionality.
