Nice work...it's time consumming but in the end it's very satisfiying to know you found and fixed the issue yourself.
The sound driver in question is it the HP sound driver? Have you tried checking it there is an updated version of that driver? Go to the vendors website for the latest driver updates...not through HP. If it is a RealTek sound driver go to the realtek website.
