Jubler 4.1.2 for .SRT files (download 4.0 and allow a couple upgrades)
VobSob 2.23 for .SUB/.IDX files
SubRip 1.50beta4 to extract subs from DVD VOBs or convert .SUB/.IDX to SRT formats

NOTE: VobSub may handle .SRT as well but I prefer Jubler. Also I haven't used Subrip in a couple years, there may be newer/better freeware apps available for this.

Nandub is rather pointless as it's intended for SBC (Smart Bitrate Control) encodes of the DivX 3.1 codec, which is antiquated and really not used by anyone any longer. It used to be the scene codec though, years ago. Obviously, you can still use Nandub to do the edits and whatever else.

Now VirtualDubMod - that's great stuff.

AutoMKV is really good to encode to MPEG-V AVC (x.264)

I actually prefer VirtualDubMod but sometimes it gives an error "Improper VBR Coding" in which case I use Nandub.

I have AVISynth as well but I have no idea how to use it.

Their value to me is almost strictly in merging two files.

Ahhhh....here is where AVISynth comes in handy, as a very basic example.

Say you have a file that can not be opened in VirtualDubMod, such as a x.264 file (MPEG-4 AVC.)

Open notepad and then copy paste this example:

DirectShowSource("C:\Downloads\ Rihanna - Only Girl (In The World) (SNL) - Full HD 1080i - musicera.track_1.m2ts")

Obviously, you should change the file and path to the one you want. It works for .mkv, .mts, .m2ts and many others. It will not work for a video file demultiplexed without audio.

(This above is my example I used it for a few days ago and can be "found" heh heh.)

Save the file as .avs. Then open the .avs in VirtualDubMod.

There are a million things you can apply with that too in the notepad, like cropping, all sorts of filters, de-interlacers etc...

But ya, it's great to use simply to get a file opened in VDubMod that couldn't be before.

I honestly don't know if I ever heard a full song of Rihanna's music (if I did it wasn't by choice - maybe in a restaurant) and if you had a bunch of partially head-shaved women together I doubt I could pick her out; not my kind of music.
