Thanks guys, I'm glad that the upgrades haven't caused any problems

Thankfully, upgrading the forum software is pretty easy most of the time. As Dan says, it's uploading a new series of files via FTP and then running an upgrade script. I do this at times when the site is quiet so it can normally be over within a few moments. If it's anything more complex then I run 2 copies of the site and perform maintenance on one version and then switch the site over.
