I've created a Team for w7forums - w7forums.com. The team # is 186660. It is easy to fold at home.
  • Start the Client to begin folding at home.

Quote:

Our goal: to understand protein folding, misfolding, and related diseases.
  • You can help scientists studying these diseases by simply running a piece of software.
    • Folding@home is a distributed computing project -- people from throughout the world download and run software to band together to make one of the largest supercomputers in the world. Every computer takes the project closer to our goals. Folding@home uses novel computational methods coupled to distributed computing, to simulate problems millions of times more challenging than previously achieved.
  • Protein folding is linked to disease, such as Alzheimer's, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many Cancers.
    • Moreover, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. "misfold"), there can be serious consequences, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many Cancers and cancer-related syndromes.
  • What is protein folding?
    • Proteins are biology's workhorses -- its "nanomachines." Before proteins can carry out these important functions, they assemble themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, in many ways remains a mystery.
  • What have we done so far?
    • We have had several successes. You can read about them on our Science page, on our Awards page, or go directly to our Results page.

I'm in! An older XP box that I can leave on a lot of the time.I don't use it for much except redundant back-ups.

Thanks yodap.

Are you familiar with Folding at Home?

Do you have any questions?

Well, I have it set up and running. The only thing I wasn't sure about was the passkey so I left it blank.

I don't think there's a security issue but I could take it off the home network if necessary.

Are we crunching for anything specific? I'll have more time to poke around tomorrow.

Which client are you using? (Standard, SMP2, or GPU2)

The passkey is only needed if you are using the SMP2 and want to take advantage of the extra bonus that you would receive after completing 10 Work Units.

Sorry c_c I had to get some sleep.

Did I mention it was old?

Intel P-4 Northwood 2.4Ghz AGP 8x (I think)
Nvidia GE Force mx440 128MB

Another limiting factor on the system is 1 Gig of PC400 Rambus

I set the cpu usage to 50% overnite and completed about 92/250. I just turned it back up to 100% and I'll keep my eye on it.
If this system is to slow to do any good, let me know.

What can you tell me about folding proteins?

Cliff - I have questions about it. I have heard about it but not familiar with it at all.

Thanks,
