I was trying to lauch a game call War Rock.

It is a P2P on-line game, and back on XP when I had McAfee it get quarantined every time I tried to run it. I has an updater and a launcher. The updater starts, then it should go into the launcher, but it says "ERROR: Cannot find execute file!"

Now I've got AVG on 7, and it has put the exe file in the vaults, along with a load of cookies. But when I tell it to restore the file, it says "Access denied for folder: [folder path] Would you like to chose a different folder for recovery?"

But everything else is denied as well. Is 7 reading AVG as a hacker and blocking it's access?
How to I restore the file so I can keep playing?

You would need to restore the folder from inside the AVG program, not from Windows 7. And to prevent this from occurring again you would also need to tell AVG to ignore the folder and the game launcher from active scanning.

I already am trying to restore it throught AVG, thata is where the problem occurs.

I already had a Resident Shield exception for the folder it was in, but not a PUP exception.

If you disable active scanning entirely will it let you restore it? It sounds like something funky is going on but without being there I'm not sure how to solve it.

You could try browsing directly to the Quarantine folder (usually is played in the AV's program folder) and manually copying it back to where it is supposed to be, but that might not work.

The AVG vault is in some ghost folder on my HD. I can only see it when I go back to XP, and it is fainter than normal folders. Plus, everything is encoded in it.

I disabled Resident Shield, made no difference. The the only thing I can think of is that Win7 isn't letting AVG get at the folder. So, after a flash of inspiration, I directed AVG to restore it to a folder on my XP drive. And it worked!

So I tried to cut and paste it from the XP drive to it original location in 7. Now though, it says "You need permission to access this file". I have full Admin control, but it still isn't letting me do it. I'm going to go back to XP, copy it to my network drive, and try getting it from there in 7. Wish me luck!

Copying it to the network drive didn't work either. Just came up with the permission screen again. I have un-installed the the game and am re-downloading it now.

Any tips for the future?

Only real tips I could give is make sure to set up AVG to exclude the game + folders from scanning in the future, before you attempt to run them. Or try a different AV program.

I've made more PUP exceptions and that seems to work. I've posted in the AV thread asking for a free AV program that doesn't give false positives.
