Computer Won't goto sleep ?
here is why and how to fix it

By default Windows 7 has media sharing turned on ( for xbox , ps3) ect

this pervents it from going into standby Mode

The Fix is Simple

Open control panel and goto

Power Options > change Plan settings > Advanced Power Settings

+Sleep
Allow hybrid Sleep > disabled
Allow wake timers >
disable/enable try both settings

+USB
USB selective suspend > ENABLE

+When Shareing media [ This is the critical one ]

Set to
allow the computer to sleep

Mods plz sticky this !!!

Where are these in the control panel? Under what section?

I don't see control panel for "Sleep" or "USB".

I ask because I've run into people this sleep issue a lot & it would be nice to have something to fix it for them. There's nothing worse than an inexperienced newb banging his or her head against their monitor because of an easily fixable problem.

I finished making those changes, then hit the "Sleep" icon on my keyboard. I came back after a couple of hours - and the setting were all wrong on awakening once again. No Aero, no screen saver, resolution had changed.
How am I supposed to leave my computer with Windows 7? Should I use Hibernate or Sleep modes? Am I doomed to only be able to suffer long start ups by having to shut down every time I use my machine? Please send advice. Thank you for your effort.

Is this tip for a prerelease version? Or a specific edition?

Using Windows 7 Professional:

+Sleep
Allow Hybrid Sleep <------- This item does not exist!

I made the change to
+Multimedia Settings
When sharing media - Allow the computer to sleep

And I see a Sleep entry in my Start>Shut Down menu, but it is DISABLED.

Any suggestions?
