Firefox profiles

I have installed Firefox 3 but am having great difficulty finding where 7 locates the profiles. The profiles for Firefox and Thunderbird need to be changed to save all the hastle of reinstalling. There appears to be some similar data in the program installation folder but it is not a profile as I know it
Can anyone tell me where the profiles are and how to change them if it is a pain?
