Failed install of HP software?

Have twice downloaded and tried to install software/ driver package for HP
Scanjet 2400, both times it failed to install. Ran HP troubleshooter which
basically said run Windows Update, disable Services, Startup items, restart
PC and try again. Didn't work.
Tried to uninstall using this option in the package, that didn't work
either, I suppose since it didn't install it can't be uninstalled.
Then installed VueScan which I have used in the past and it's a nice little
program but when I try to run it it brings up that it's looking for
something on a disc or network which isn't there, obviously something to do
with the failed HP install. If I cancel out of that message a few times
VueScan appears to work but only intermittently and sometimes scanned images
come up with a green tint.
I have an HP folder in my Programs folder but deleting this makes no
difference.
How can I get totally rid of any traces of the HP software so that I can try
VueScan?
If that doesn't work is it possible that the scanner itself is faulty?
Any advice appreciated.

Have you tried to install the software in Safe Mode? Some software will
install that way and it eliminates interference with other software
sometimes.

With so little info about your system and it's current status, I can
only offer an idea. And I'm hesitant to even do that.

Assuming you know for sure the scanner works (i.e. you didn't dig it out
of the closet after years of dormancy :-) )...

Why not open System Restore, and restore to a point before you attempted
to install both pieces of software? Then, make sure Windows is
completely defragged and disk clean up is run.

Run a couple of good anti-virus and spyware programs.

I'll leave it up to you as to whether you want to run a registry
cleaner, I don't want to start that endless debate here again.

Make sure Windows is fully updated.

Create a new System Restore point.

Now, pick one of the scanner products and try the install.

Have you got the correct drivers (32 or 64 bit)?

Have tried in Safe Mode, again "fatal installation error", tried the
registry cleaner in CCleaner also.
Safe Mode install gave me the option to clean up failed install which I
used.
VueScan seems much more stable now except for the error box when starting it
"please wait while windows configures scan". I click Cancel, next box is
looking for the location of "scan.msi" which it can't find, closing that
VueScan now seems to be working OK.
I can live with the error boxes now that I at least can scan images etc
though if I could get this file and knew where to put it, no improper
suggestions please, I would be happier.

Googling for "scan.msi" it seems a very common issue with HP scanners and
printers, it's part of the installation package.
Really all I would like now is to stop the error message and forget about HP
software. Incidentally I would recommend VueScan as an alternative to mfr's
software.

Microsoft has some information on failed installs and a Fixit tool which may help:

That looks like a really handy page!

There's a link on that page to
http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Pr..._and_Uninstall that may
also help.

My Win7 Pro (and XP Pro) came with its own scan software.
No need for me to install the HP bloatware.

I use Vuescan with an Epson scanner that is not supported by Epson on
Windows 7. It requires NO manufacturer's driver. Have you considered
that?

As far as getting rid of traces... take a look at the Revo Uninstaller. I
use it. I tried the free version and liked it well enough to buy the full
one.
