I currently use an external drive for backup and testing purposes and it was divided into 4 partitions all NTFS formatted. I've deleted one defunct partition using the disk management utility and would like to extend the partition used by Acronis True Image which is defined as active, primary whereas the others are defined as primary.

When I use the extend facility of DMU it says the partition to be extended will be changed from basic to dynamic and I'd like to understand the implications before I go ahead.

3 questions
1. Will I lose the data in the partition I want to extend?
2. Will changing to a dynamic partition affect how programs access it?
3. Is there a way of extending a partition and keep it as basic?

Thank you
