Don't Want 'Pin to ...", Prefer Separate Taskbar Icon

I just did a clean (custom) install of Win7HomePremium over VistaHP.

I manually created a Show Desktop icon, using method 2, here:

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...n-taskbar.html

I then dragged it to the task. Now I'd like to creats some more shortcuts
to put on the taskbar, but whenever I try to drag a new shortcut to the
taskbar, I get the message "Pin to Show Desktop", but I really want it to
be a separate icon on the taskbar. Is this possible?

You can re-enable the Quick Launch Toolbar and drag shortcuts there. To
the right of the QL area will be the "pin-able" area.

Many thanks, Bruce. I've now got two Win7 machines in my home, and
although I'm going to try to stay with the Win7 'method', but the article
you give will make for good reading.

I can see that pinning does save taskbar space.

Thanks again,
Boris

Although it does not bother me enough to worry about it, I do wish
Win7 could just give you the option to have the "Show Desktop" icon
where it always was.

I actually would like them to leave it exactly the same, but move it
to the extreme left before the Start icon. They could maybe make it
another color.

I'm not sure I am interpreting this correctly, but let me speak :-)

It sounds to me like you are trying to drop the new icon on the Show
Desktop icon instead of on a blank (unoccupied) part of the taskbar.

If that is true, then you need to drop the new icon on a blank spot.
You knew I was going to say that, didn't you? :-)

I would think so.

But why on earth did you create a "Show Desktop" when it's already
there? Look at the slightly different background at the extreme
right edge of the taskbar: that's your Show Desktop.

You can also get to the desktop by pressing and holding Alt and
pressing Tab repeatedly.

And of course if you have a Windows key you can also press Windows+D.

Why bother? Right-click on the taskbar, choose "Show Desktop"....

Oh, nice! Never knew... that's one of those forest/trees things. (I've
right-clicked on the task bar for other things but never saw "Show the
Desktop.") Thanks.
