How do I open XPI Files

I am trying to open a Firefox addon file that is in an *.xpi format , with
no success. All the sites I goto are just trying to get you to install there
software.

They are usually ZIP files. Just unzip them.

(For Firefox 8 and later) Open Firefox, open the add-on manager, then
click on the small cog in the top right hand corner of the page, then
select "Install add-on from file" in the dialogue box, then navigate to
the .xpi file.

I suspect that right-clicking on the file might automatically open it in
Forefox, but I don't have any files of that type to check on this system.

If you just want to see what's in the file, I suspect others will be
more knowledgable about how to disassemble one, or you could contact the
writer.

I have a sample .xpi file here, and it's actually some kind of ZIP
format. I can open it with 7ZIP and it has a bunch of files inside,
which are used to install the addon.

Usually, decompression tools support a "verify" or "file listing" option,
which can be used to tell if the archive is severely damaged. I don't
know how many compression formats are protected with checksums, so that
you can tell if the thing is corrupted or not.

If I look in the registry, the only program registered to use .xpi is
Firefox. Which means if I double clicked it right now, Firefox should
get it.

You're not being clear about what it is you're trying to do. If
you're trying to install it in Firefox, just drag 'n drop it on the
Firefox Add-On window. If you're trying to look inside or it, it can
be opened by any Zip file utility, like Winzip, 7zip, Winrar, etc. -
even Windows built-in zip capability, if you change the file extension
from xpi to zip.

It's an installation file for firefox.
You're better off going to the firefox add-on web page and installing it
from there.

Technically, XPI is a Mozilla Add-On. Could be for Firefox or
Thunderbird.
