New install 7Ultra. Changed several setting thru control panel. After
a reboot there are two grayed "desktop.ini" icons on the screen. Can
I just delete them??

No..you've chosen to show Hidden Files and Folders. They're settings files
used by the computer ( that's why they're opaque ).

Do what I do ...move them to the right hand side of the screen and forget
about them ( or hide them again )

Yes. But they will probably come back :-)

Uncheck "Show hidden files", or else check "Hide protected operating
system files", and they should disappear until you reverse the option
again.

They appear in many directories, not just the desktop.

BTW, the above methods will also hide those pesky junction points.

I often think it's a pity that you can't hide files and folders on a
single-selection basis, rather than all-or-none.

Thanks for the link, but I was looking for ways to eg hide those
desktop.ini files on the desktop, If you have the system set up to show
hidden files and folders. This overrides individual settings (see
http://www.sevenforums.com/customiza...tml#post711275).

I agree; I did the same thing and they've not reappeared in forever.
I have 'Show hidden files' checked and 'Hide protected OS files' unchecked,
and desktop.ini shows up 335 times on my hard drive in various folders, but
not on my desktop.
