Defragmenting your hard disk (often called defragging) is a process in which the data on a hard drive is re-arranged in to a logical order, where single files and directories are ordered next to each other on the disk to improve read speeds on mechanical hard drives.
A good defragging application may be able to speed up your system, especially if this process has never been performed before. Although NTFS and Windows 7 are optimised to reduce drive fragmentation, it is worth performing a defrag occasionally to keep your system at its best possible performance.
To begin, start
dfrgui.exe from the run box or find
Disk Defragmenter on the start menu and click it. You can now choose to set up a schedule - ideally, this should be a time when your PC is regularly on but not under any heavy load, once per week (max) should be fine. To perform an on-demand defrag, click the desired drive letter and then
Defragment Disk:
The defragmention process will when begin, and a percentage of completion will be shown in the main status window:
Depending on the fragmentation level and size of your drives, it could take anywhere from a few minutes to over an hour to complete.
