Connecting a laptop to internet

Hlo Xprts :-)

I am trying to connect my Samsung N150 to the Internet and am having
problems. I haven't done this for a while, so I'm rusty. My main
computer's DSL was connected to the Internet and I moved the cable to
the N150.

A USB cable connects both N150 and the D-Link modem. In same way the
LAN cable is connected to both and the LAN light keeps flickering on the
modem. Other lights are steady.

The DSL socket of the N150 is connected to the DSL phone line, which
should be ok.

Suggestions appreciated.

If the machine doesn't have a vaild IP, then it's not going to connect.
If the IP starts with 169., then it's not an IP that's going to allow
the machine to access the Internet, which you can check by using
ipconfig /all at the command prompt.

Maybe your ISP only accepts computers on its network that have been
provisioned by the ISP.

This is confusing. You have both a USB *and* a "LAN" (I take that to
mean Ethernet) cable connecting your laptop to the modem? That's not
necessary. Remove one of them - I suggest the USB; use only the
Ethernet cable.

Your ISP probably allows only one device at a time to be connected to
their modem. Your main computer is already registered as that one
device. If you disconnected the cable from the main computer and
immediately connected it to the laptop, you probably need to power off
the modem so that it will assign it's one allowed IP address to this
new device.

You might consider getting a router so you can share you internet
connection with multiple devices.

I agree with "Nils" analysis, that you shouldn't have both the USB
and Ethernet cables connected between the D-Link and the N150.

It would help, if you'd state the D-Link model number.

I would also agree, that adding an intervening network box,
between the D-Link and the computer(s), would allow you to use
more than one computer, and without the usage of USB.

I suspect your D-Link box actually can support two computers
at the same time, but I will be able to verify that, using the
D-Link model number.

Start by going back to something which previously worked. If you
disconnect the laptop and connect your main computer in the way it was
connected before, does that then work ok?
