[SOLVED] Can't browse Internet but can ping sites

Windows 7 with current updates. IPv6 & Quality of Service not enabled. IPv4 set for auto DHCP & DNS. Can ping router and 4.2.2.2 and 66.102.9.99 OK. Can not ping www.google.com. Have reset winsock via [netsh winsock reset catalog] and [netsh int ip reset reset.log]. Have un-installed IE & re-installed. Have uninstalled & reinstalled network adaptor drivers. DNS server's status is good. Set only DNS to 208.67.222.222 (open DNS). Firefox can not access Internet either. Have set up new user & it can not access WAN either. Firewall is off & security software (ThreatFire & Immunet) are disabled. No proxy server. Ran CCleaner cleaner & registry scans. 'Diagnose' option on network adaptor could not identify the problem.

Try and change the DNS back to "Obtain DNS server address automatically" and see if you can get anywhere.

The problem is definitely linked to the DNS, which is, at the moment, unable to convert the "name" address" into an IP number.

Changed the DNS back to auto obtain: no change.

Disabled onboard NIC & installed PCI NIC: no change. So evidently the problem is not related to the network card.

It sounds like you have exhausted quite a few ideas already. As such I would personally try the brute force approach...

If you installed any sort of network drivers/programs make sure they are not listed under "Programs and Features". If they are then uninstall those first. Next open up your Device Manager, find the "Network Adapters" category. Expand it, then right-click and select Uninstall for each and every single individual item listed here.

Reboot only with your onboard NIC enabled and the PCI NIC removed, and see if Windows installs the drivers for it automatically. If it does not then install the latest network driver for it and reboot to see if that works. If it doesn't work please post the computer model/specs, and what 32/64bit version it is.

The problem was the Bonjour software. This link gave me the info to get rid of Boujour.

If you can ping sites by name but cannot access the Internet, try flushing the dns. Fixed this issue instantly.

In Win 7, start up a command prompt and choose "run as an administrator".
Type: ipconfig /flushdns
