I have Win 7 Hone Premium and am new to the OS. I have Free Sound
Recorder on my XP desktop and would like it on my Win 7 laptop, but I
have dl'd and instlalled two different sound recorder applications and
each gives me an error when I try to run them. - both error reports
state that there is an error opening audio device for input - bad
device ID.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what may be responsible for the
errors?

I am assuming that Win 7 does not include a sound recorder app as I
have failed to locate one so far.

TIA.

Mary

Win7 does have a sound recorder. Go to Start and type 'sound recorder' in
the search box. The top result should be what you're looking for.

Win 7 Pro does have an included sound recorder. It's possible that Win 7
home does also (I don't use home). Look in Start, All programs, under
Accessories.
It may be that the laptop's sound system is not completely configured
for sound inputs in the mixer settings. By default, laptops are usually
setup to use a built in microphone.

Home Premium does. I'm not sure about Starter edition, as that one went
back due to a hardware problem.

If not, then Audacity is free and works in Windows 7.

They're also set up not to let you monitor live in most cases.

Also, of course, the majority of laptops and netbooks, even if they do
have an input socket, it will be a mono mic. one, not a stereo or line
in one. (Doubly daft as most usually have a mic. built in anyway these
days.) Mic. sockets are pink - I think line in blue. (Green is line
out/speaker.)

Many thanks to all responders - I will try the Win 7 sound recorder
and see if it meets my needs, if not I will pursue the sound card
configuration and see if there is a way to tweek the audio input..
