I would be careful though. The Q9650 is 95W.

If you had a Small Form Factor (SFF) machine, there
could be Vcore power conversion limits or fan cooling limits.
There might be some differentiation between sub-models of the 780,
as to what processors are available options.
If your machine is a regular-sized desktop, then
your upgrade is a little less risky. Regular sized
desktops aren't as hard to cool, and larger power supplies
can be fitted and so on.
Using a search engine, find another Optiplex 780 user,
who has already done this upgrade.
