My dell Optiplex 780 is currently running with an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor
E7500 2.93GHz .
Can I upgrade it to a INTEL CORE I7 QUAD CORE PROCESSOR I7-875 2.93GHZ?

If not, what might be the best CPU upgrade path?

Thanks

I just found a Intel Q9560 3.0Ghz 1333FSB 12Mb may be compatible as the
Optiplex 780 can handle 1333FSB as well as 1066. Possibly, this might be the
best upgrade option?

That's the suggestion here.

Processor Help Me Choose

* Intel CoreTM 2 Quad (Q9650, Q9550, Q9400)
* Intel CoreTM 2 Duo (E8600, E8500, E7600, E8400, E7500)
* Intel Pentium Dual CoreTM (E5800)

I would be careful though. The Q9650 is 95W.

The E7500 is 65W.

If you had a Small Form Factor (SFF) machine, there
could be Vcore power conversion limits or fan cooling limits.
There might be some differentiation between sub-models of the 780,
as to what processors are available options.

If your machine is a regular-sized desktop, then
your upgrade is a little less risky. Regular sized
desktops aren't as hard to cool, and larger power supplies
can be fitted and so on.

Using a search engine, find another Optiplex 780 user,
who has already done this upgrade.

Just for peace of mind, I found a table of processors versus
form factor for your machine. Page 8 shows, only the
Ultra Small Form Factor (USFF) box, can't take Q9650.
The others are OK.
